Insertion loss.

Also written Attenuation, Link loss, dB loss.

What is insertion loss in cabling?

Insertion loss is the signal a link swallows between its two ends, measured in decibels; lower is better. Every joint spends part of the budget: the allowance for one mated connector pair is 0.75 decibels at most. When a certifier fails a link on loss, count the joints first, then the length.

Defined by ANSI/TIA-568.3-D, which sets the component loss allowances, published by TIA.
