Optical loss budget.

Also written Loss budget, Power budget, Link budget.

How is an optical loss budget worked out?

An optical loss budget is the total loss a fibre link may show and still carry its traffic. It is added up from the parts: the cable's loss per kilometre times its length, plus an allowance for each connector pair and each splice. Work the budget out before installing, then prove the installed link against it with a certifier or an optical time domain reflectometer.

Defined by ANSI/TIA-568.3-D, which gives the loss budget method, published by TIA.
