What is fusion splicing and how good is the joint?
Fusion splicing melts two fibre ends together with an electric arc so the glass becomes one continuous path. A good fusion splice loses around 0.02 to 0.05 decibels, far less than any connector. In the field, factory made pigtails are spliced onto the incoming cable, so every connector face is factory polished and only the splice is made on site.
