What is an LIU or ODF in fibre cabling?

An LIU, or ODF, is the enclosure where an optical cable ends and patching begins. The cable enters, its loose tubes are opened, each fibre is spliced or terminated onto an adapter on the front plate, and every connection after that is made with patch cords. It protects the splices and gives the fibre a fixed, labelled face.

Defined by ANSI/TIA-568.3-D for the optical components, with IEC 61754 for the connector interfaces on the front plate, published by TIA and IEC.
