Multimode fibre.

What is multimode fibre?

Multimode fibre has a wide core, typically 50 microns, so light travels in many paths at once. That makes it cheap to couple to low-cost transceivers, and it limits distance: reach is measured in hundreds of metres rather than kilometres. It is the normal choice inside a building or across a campus backbone.
