What is single-mode fibre?

Single-mode fibre has a narrow core, around 9 microns, so light travels one path and spreads far less. Reach is measured in kilometres rather than hundreds of metres. The fibre itself is not the expensive part; the transceivers are, which is why it is specified for links between buildings and across a city rather than inside one room.
