OTDR.

Also written Optical time-domain reflectometer.

What is an OTDR?

An OTDR sends a pulse of light down a fibre and reads the reflections, drawing a map of the whole run: every splice, every connector, every bend, and the distance to each. It is how a fault gets found at a stated metre mark instead of somewhere in two kilometres of duct. Loss testing says whether a link passes; the OTDR says where and why it does not.
