M8 or M12 for a sensor?

M8 where the sensor is small and the cable is thin: proximity switches, photoelectric sensors and the actuators beside them take the 8 millimetre thread in 3 and 4 pin forms, and the connector is half the size of an M12. M12 where power, more contacts or Ethernet travels, and wherever the plant has standardised. Both seal to IP67 mated, and both come as cable connectors, panel mounts and cordsets.
