What does an IP rating like IP67 mean on a connector?

An IP rating, ingress protection, is the two digit code for how well an enclosure or a mated connector keeps out solids and water. The first digit covers dust, the second water, and IP67 means dust tight plus half an hour under a metre of water. The rating only holds mated or capped, so order sealing caps for any port left open.

Defined by IEC 60529, which defines both digits and the tests behind them, published by IEC.
