M12 coding.

Also written A-coded M12, D-coded M12, X-coded M12.

What does A, B, D or X coding mean on an M12 connector?

M12 coding is the keyway pattern inside an M12 connector that decides what it can mate with. A coded parts carry sensor signals, B coded fieldbus, D coded 100 megabit Ethernet, and X coded gigabit and above. The keyways make a wrong pairing impossible to push together. Match the coding on the cordset to the port before choosing anything else.

Defined by IEC 61076-2-101, the sectional specification for the M12 interface, published by IEC.
