What do M5, M8 and M12 mean on a circular connector?

M5 to M23 circular connectors are round industrial connectors named after the metric thread that screws their coupling nut down. The number is the thread diameter in millimetres, so an M12 couples on a 12 mm thread. Small sizes carry sensor signals, M12 carries fieldbus and Ethernet, and M23 carries servo and power circuits. Pick the size by current and conductor count, then the coding.
