Solid and stranded conductor.

Also written Solid core, Stranded core, Conductor construction.

Should I use solid or stranded conductor cable?

A solid conductor is one copper wire; a stranded conductor is several fine wires twisted into one. Stranded cable flexes without breaking but is allowed up to 20 percent more loss per metre, so it is kept for short cords. Run solid cable in walls and trays, terminate it on jacks, and patch with stranded cords.

Defined by ANSI/TIA-568.2-D, which assigns solid cable to the horizontal run and stranded cordage to the cords, published by TIA.
