When does an industrial cable need a shield?

An industrial cable needs a shield when it carries a signal beside a drive, a motor or a welder, where the electrical noise would otherwise arrive on the wire. The braid or foil is earthed at one end, usually the panel, through the connector's metal shell. Power and simple switch signals rarely need it; analogue sensors, encoders and fieldbus nearly always do.
