U/FTP, F/UTP and S/FTP.

What do U/FTP, F/UTP and S/FTP mean on a cable?

These letters describe the screening inside a twisted pair cable. The letter before the slash is the overall screen, the letters after it are the pairs: U is unscreened, F is foil, S is braid. So F/UTP has one foil around unscreened pairs, U/FTP a foil on each pair, and S/FTP both braid and foils. Screened cable only works when it is earthed end to end.

Defined by ISO/IEC 11801, which defines the screening code letters, published by IEC.
