What is an SFP port?

An SFP port is an empty socket on a switch that takes a small plug-in transceiver, so one switch can speak copper or fibre, short reach or long, depending on the module fitted. SFP carries one Gigabit; SFP+ carries ten. The transceiver must match the fibre on the two counts that matter, mode and distance, and the two ends of a link must match each other.

A transceiver is matched to the whole link: the switch or router must support it, the port and link rate must agree with its form factor and speed, the fibre must be single mode or multimode to suit it with the right connector, and wavelength, reach and optical budget must work at both ends.
