Managed switch.

Also written Smart switch, L2 managed switch.

What is a managed switch?

A managed switch is one you can log into, and that single fact is most of what you pay for. Management buys VLANs to keep cameras and computers apart, the ability to see which port an error lives on, and a configuration that survives replacement. An unmanaged switch just forwards traffic, which is fine under one work position and expensive the first time a shared floor goes wrong.

Defined by IEEE 802.1Q, which defines the VLANs management exists to give you, published by IEEE.
