Access point.

Also written AP, WAP.

What is an access point?

An access point turns the wired network into Wi-Fi for one area. Coverage is not the hard part; capacity is, and the choice is made on how many people sit inside one radio's cell, not on the speed printed on the box. A single PoE cable powers it and carries its traffic, which is why a wireless project is a cabling project first.

Defined by IEEE 802.11, the wireless LAN standard every access point implements, published by IEEE.
