Why are network racks 19 inches wide?
The 19 inch standard fixes the width of the mounting rails so any maker's equipment bolts into any maker's rack. IEC 60297 sets the panel width at 482.6 millimetres, which is 19 inches, with the hole positions to match. Width is settled; what a buyer actually chooses is height in rack units and depth in millimetres.
