Rack unit (U).

Also written U, RU.

What is a rack unit?

A rack unit, written U, is the height step rack equipment is built to: 44.45 millimetres, fixed by the EIA-310 standard behind the 19 inch rack. A switch is 1U, most servers 1U or 2U, a 42U cabinet is full height. Count the U going in, add growth, and check depth too, because a 600 millimetre cabinet will not close on a full depth server.

Defined by EIA/ECIA-310, published by ECIA.
