What is a patch panel?

A patch panel is the row of sockets where the cables hidden in the walls come to an end. Each cable is punched down once on the back, and everything after that happens on the front with patch cords. That habit is what protects the building's cabling: the fixed link is terminated once and never disturbed, and every later change is a cord swap rather than a re-termination.
