What is a VLAN and why segment a network?
A VLAN, or virtual local area network, divides one physical switch into separate networks whose traffic never mixes. Under IEEE 802.1Q each frame carries a tag, and 4094 usable tag values mean one cable can carry thousands of networks. Put cameras, guest Wi-Fi and office machines on their own VLANs, and buy a managed switch, because only managed hardware can create them.
