What is a next-generation firewall?

A next-generation firewall decides on the application rather than the port, so it can tell backup traffic from browsing on the same connection. That inspection has a price: throughput with every protection switched on is a much smaller number than the headline on the datasheet, and honest sizing reads from the smaller number. The licences carry the security services, so the appliance and its subscription are one decision, not two.
