What is a fibre adaptor or coupler?

A fibre adaptor, also called a coupler or a mating sleeve, is the small part that holds two connectors face to face so their ferrules meet on axis. It sits in the front plate of an LIU and in inline joints. It must match the connector, LC or SC, and the polish, since an APC adaptor is angled. A dirty or worn adaptor is the commonest hidden loss.

Defined by IEC 61754, which defines the fibre connector interfaces, published by IEC.
