When does a UPS need to be three phase?
When the load is, or when the size demands it. Above about 10 kVA the incoming supply is three phase, so the UPS takes three phase in; whether it gives three phase or single phase out depends on the load behind it, a server room on single phase and a plant on three. It is sized from a measured load list, with battery banks sized for the runtime wanted.
