What is the difference between CMR and SMR drives?
Conventional magnetic recording writes each track separately; shingled magnetic recording overlaps tracks like roof shingles to fit more data on the same platter. The overlap means a rewrite must lift and relay neighbouring tracks, so sustained writes slow badly once the drive's cache fills. Specify conventional recording for RAID and network storage; shingled suits archives written once and rarely changed.
